MICRO-GRID -Intelligent Energy Management
While it may seem like a good idea to sell back PV power during the day, this is not the most efficient use of residential PV power. It is a complete misconception that you can "store" power on the grid. You can only create paper credits. Our systems store all power generated from any PV or wind source and when used in grid-tied situations, create "MICRO-GRIDS" which are independent from the main utility structure. Power that would have been required from the utility grid but is no longer required as it supplied permanently from the onsite power system. This reduces your billing and utility load in a way which will not be affected by policies, rate changes or other factors. NEGA-WATTS (power NOT purchased from the utility) is a term which represents this unused utility power. We can give you the same effect as Net-metering WITHOUT the sell-back connection or the red tape involved. As utilities deal with increasing severe weather and other climatic issues related to Climate Change, power conditions will deteriorate. Any sell-back power system, however large but without energy storage will leave you in the dark when the utility is down. Further, any system with very small battery capacity will reduce your off-grid backup power considerably so always use a properly sized battery system. Currently, most of Europe and the UK have now come to the inescapable conclusion that large scale wind and PV utility scale systems will not be able to either reverse greenhouse gas emissions nor provide a reliable power supply. In the UK, they now pay folks an incentive to be Off-The-Grid, partly because the grid can no longer serve them reliably and because experience has shown that these people have a greater sense of responsibility regarding energy use. Power Package systems meet or exceed all state or federal code and safety requirements for Renewable Energy production and are code compliant with NEC-690 when installed and operated properly. This includes all PV modules, mounts, wind generators or other appurtenances which supply energy to the Power Package system.
 




Backup Power and UPS systems
Any of our Power Package systems can be used in conjunction with any solar array or wind generator, or without to supply backup power for cell-phone capacity, IT systems or any use. They will out-perform any existing UPS system and qualitfy for tax credits when used in conjunction with any amount of solar panels. For instance, a 14kw UPS system will typically cost at least twice a much as any comparable Power Package system, will require more space and is typically not able to supply loads for more than a few minutes. Our Power Package system can integrate and utilize grid power, solar power and wind power, thus qualifying for tax credits. It can also be programmed to utilize time-of-day utility billing, can switch between grid and renewable sources when they are available and is mcuh more efficient with longer life-cycle batteries thus cutting operating costs. Integrated Package Systems-PV modules
All Power Package systems include PV modules and mounts in the pricing including array combiners and wiring connectors. Beacuse our systems have been optimized for our specific power production, all systems utilize 175watt monocrystaline modules rated at 14% power rating as this produces the most energy with the Outback MPPT style controller, thus all PV array sizes are built around this system design. Outback FM-60 controllers can handle up to 2000 watts per contoller at 24vdc and approximately 3000 watts per controller at 48vdc system voltage. Our array sizes are matched in voltage and output to maximize these and other settings in the charge controller.

GRID TIE Power Package-MICRO-GRID
Our grid tied Power Package systems feature Outback GT/GV inverters with complete metering and controls in an all Outback system including FM-60 charge controller, Hub and Mate-2 communications with the Power Package standard plug-n-play design. These systems are completely programmed and ready to start up when installed. Installation has been simplified and all systems are supplied with AGM/VRLA sealed, maintenance free battery systems. Systems include PV array and roof mount for all applications sized for the system as indicated by our extensive field experience in Power Package applications. Why would you purchase half a solar power system? Not having batteries is like having a car with three wheels. High quality energy storage is and should be an integral part of any residential solar power system. As a MICRO-GRID system, you can choose when to purchase utility power and how you are billed, irregardles of the grid-tie benefits.

OFF-GRID Power Packages
Our off-grid Power Package systems are very similar to our Grid-tie systems except that these systems utilize Outback inverters which are not rated for sell-back operation, and feature larger battery banks of our AGM/VRLA batteries for stand-alone operation. These systems also feature a backup generator control system. In situations where sell-back is not possible but load management using RE sources is desired, Power Packages can be grid-connected without selling back power.

Systems include special portable enclosure and complete PV rack system with provisions for wind generator input as well as PV.
 




Why we use AGM/Gel batteries...
Our Power Package systems are all battery based systems, because storing energy on site is ALWAYS perferable to a grid-tied only connection. We use AGM/Gel hybrid batteries for a number of reasons. While there are many new and highly publicized battery technologies, none of these compare to these lead-acid batteries in three important areas: Life cycle cost, Energy density and Performance. In a properly sized and executed power system, Hybrid AGM/Gel lead-acid batteries last nearly as long as Nickel-iron or Lithium-Ion cells, all use factors being the same. The energy density of lead-acid AGM/Gel batteries are similar to nearly all batteries including Nimh batteries and are only slightly less per kwh than Lithium-Ion, but the cost to operate and maintain is substantially below all newer battery technologies, with a predictable charge and discharge cycle and reliable voltage. Further, Lead-acid batteries can be easily recycled. Currently in the US, nearly 90% of all lead-acid batteries are recycled.
 
Outback Power Systems inverter
Outback inverters are integrated into the system with most models having 2 inverters for 120/240vac output. Systems include connections to Mate-2 communications. Outback inverters feature pure, clean Sinewave power output and when combined with our AGM battery systems are more efficient than anything else avalable.
Outback systems FM-60 charge controller
Outback systems FM-60 charge controller features 60-amp capability and with MPPT technology which optimizes array capabilities. This one controller can utilize a nearly 2000 watt array on 24vdc battery systems and up to 3200 watts on 48vdc battery systems. Arrays can be wired up to 72vdc for efficient transmission voltages and used with a 24vdc or 48vdc battery bank.

All systems feature complete Outback Hub communications and Mate-2 control which allows us to completely set up your system in the shop for precise use including power levels, load sharing inverter controls and metering of all systems and components.

Plug-n-Play design
All systems comtinue the original plug-n-play design of the Power Package, enabling end users to easily install and configure systems, or professionals to install systems more quickly.
Inverters and controls are neatly integrated
Systems are compact and well integrated into the control module allowing for ease of use, and the compact system size allows for may configurations. Modules are easy to move and fit thru any doorway or entry.
Battery modules-small
The new configuration allows for several mounting appliactions and the smaller battery modules can be stacked as required.
Alternate larger battery modules
Large systems may be supplied with our original battery module containers which are 32" wide x 30" deep x 34" tall and can also be stacked if necessary. Some battery systems over 1200 a/h are supplied in these containers. Once installed, batteries require no maintenance or service. Some 48vdc systems may also be supplied with these battery modules
Flex-net DC monitor card
All systems produced after November 1, 2007 will include the Outback Power Systems DC meter card which allows the Mate-2 monitor to be used for battery amp-hours and other functions for accuracy and ease of use with our AGM battery systems
