Project: Sustainable Technology Center-San Juan Islands
|
 | The project had a renewable energy system utilizing (3) PV tracking mounts connected to the central control system which was state-of-the-art at the time designed by Planetary Systems. You may have seen this photo in many forms used by others in renewable erergy publications, however Planetary Systems did design and install this entire system with the help of Guard Electric on San Juan Island.
|
The battery bank was (2) parallel strings of IBE industrial 2vdc cells in a sealed and fan-vented enclosure. These batteries were the best available at the time (1995)
| |
 | The power system consisted of (2) Trace SW-4024 inverters with grid-tie setup which feed all the renewable energy outlets and systems, thruought the complex. The renewable energy power was dedicated to prioity lighting, heating and specific outlets located in all offices to provide continuous power during outages and to offload this power from the utility source.
|
This project utilized an onsite water recycling unit which allowed waste water to be cleaned and re-cycleed thru the system to flush toilets, saving a lot of fresh water. The pressure tank with the X on it was designated as non-potable water.
| |
 | The project and systems were very successful, allowing this complex to use 80% less services than comparable buildings, but also brought to light the complexities of dealing with regulatory agencies which generally are not on-board with such advanced systems and who do not like change unless they can control it. In recent years these agencies have become a little more enlightened.
